About 1630 hours, Tuesday, May 18, a windstorm blew through Pine
Mountain.
Moments after the storm passed, the Pine Mountain Fire Department
was dispatched to a downed tree blocking Ga. Hwy. 18 on the north
end of town.
Firefighters arrived on the scene to find the large pecan tree was
not actually on the roadway. With the tree trunk broken slightly
above the ground, the remainder of the trunk and large limbs had
fallen onto a power line and telephone trunk line, and was suspected
about eight feet above the road.
Presuming the power line was still “hot” and the tree limbs too low
for traffic to pass under, the road was blocked. Fire trucks were
staged north and south of the obstruction with a Harris County
Deputy Sheriff on the north end and a Pine Mountain Police Officer
on the south end.
A call was placed to Georgia Power Company for a lineman to turn off
the power before the tree limbs could be cut and the roadway
cleared.
With the windstorm apparently having caused damage in other areas,
it was over an hour before a Georgia Power lineman arrived on the
scene. A line fuse was pulled and the power line dropped on the
ground.
Firefighters quickly cut the tree trunk and limbs into manageable
lengths. As the road was being cleared, one of the city’s employees
brought a frontend loader to the scene which resulted in the roadway
being cleared much quicker.
By 1800 hours the roadway was cleared and traffic was flowing.
There were no injuries in connection with incident. |
