The annual Wheels of Fire Bike Tour brought hundreds of cycling
enthusiasts to Pine Mountain on Saturday, March 27, and once again
Pine Mountain firefighters were on hand to help.
All of the cyclists participating in the road tour passed through
Pine Mountain, one of only three places in which all of those
cyclists pass, and the most congested area.
The tour was split into three lengths with the shortest at 26 miles,
the longest at 101 miles, and the other two between the two
extremes.
All of the road cyclists leave Hamilton, proceed through the
Hopewell Community and then through Pine Mountain. After passing
through Pine Mountain, the routes diverge.
The Pine Mountain Fire Department establishes three assistance
points for the cyclists with two of those points containing restroom
and rehabilitation facilities. At all three points, medical
assistance is available from First Responders and Harris County EMS
units can be summoned.
The first assistance point is located at the intersection of U.S.
Hwy 27 (Main Street) and Ga. Hwy. 18 (Harris Street), one of the
busier intersections in Pine Mountain. Incidents at intersection
have been rare. With the cyclists busy watching vehicular traffic,
firefighters make sure they get headed the correct direction.
The second assistance point is located at the Chipley Village
shopping center, where the cyclists are turned onto Ga. Hwy. 354.
This is another busy intersection, which has been the site of some
incidents. This year’s medical assistance needs were very light.
The third assistance point staffed by the Pine Mountain Fire
Department is located on Ga. Hwy. 190, which is a picturesque drive
through the mountain ridge. After facing steep inclines encountered
climbing onto the ridge, the cyclists are often in need of rest and
rehabilitation.
Each year, some unique happening seems to take place as the Wheels
of Fire Bicycle Tour passes through Pine Mountain. This year,
firefighters welcomed visiting firefighters from Massachusetts and
from the Atlanta area.
Also welcome was a visit from two of the Red Bull girls, who offered
free samples of Red Bull energy drink to the firefighters.
The Wheels of Fire bicycle tour is sponsored by the Harris County
Chamber of Commerce. |
