Firefighters in Pine Mountain periodically eat together, often
cooking at the fire station.
For
several weeks, firefighters had planned a cookout for Friday
evening, February 12. But Mother Nature presented a surprise, in the
form of snow.
Accumulating snow is a rarity in west central Georgia, but on the
day of the cookout, it began snowing about 11:00 a.m. and continuing
into the night.
But
firefighters are known to overcome obstacles and certainly were not
about to allow snow to interfere with eating. Steaks were put on the
grills with hot wings, baked potatoes and more prepared in the
kitchen. The training room served as a dining room.
Some
vigorous games of ping pong were held and a snowball fight erupted
in the fire station driveways.
During
the snowball fight, a snowman firefighter was constructed completed
with a red plastic fire helmet.
A total
snowfall of about five inches was measured in Pine Mountain.
Despite
a buildup of ice on power lines, no power outages were reported in
Pine Mountain.
Icy
patches on roadways formed, but there were no major accidents in the
Pine Mountain Fire Department’s primary service area.
Unlike
previous snow and ice events that kept firefighters busy, this time
the snow just brought fun.
Brilliant sunshine and temperatures in the mid 40s resulted in most
of the snow melting the next day. |
