Pine Mountain Georgia Fire Department News

January 12, 2009
Pine Mountain Fire Department Hosting EMS Unit

On January 1, 2009, the Harris County EMS expanded to place an ambulance and staff in Pine Mountain. Getting the ambulance ready and prepared to answer calls bright and early January 1 were, left to right: EMS Chief David McCall, paramedic Randall Wright, paramedic Gary Metcalf, and EMS Supervisor Scott Lightsey. Wright and Metcalf were the first paramedic crew to work out of the new facility.

A Harris County EMS unit began operating out of the Pine Mountain fire station on January 1, 2009.

On many occasions, Paramedics and First Responders with the Pine Mountain Fire Department have provided critical patient care while waiting from 10 to over 30 minutes for an ambulance to arrive.

The number of such occurrences should now be reduced and the residents of Pine Mountain and northern Harris County should receive quicker service with an EMS unit located in Pine Mountain.

Firefighters and town council members lobbied hard for an EMS unit to be placed in the town and the design of the Pine Mountain Public Center incorporated features designed to house an EMS unit. In addition to the kitchen and training room, the fire department side of the building includes shower rooms, washer and dryer, bunkroom, supply room and lockable lockers – all of which were funded by the town during construction.

To facilitate housing mixed gender EMS crews, the county constructed two separate bedrooms in the fire department bunkroom

Stationing the EMS unit and paramedics in the fire station was termed as a temporary measure. The Harris County airport, located just outside of the town, will be the site of considerable improvements and county officials have stated their intention move the EMS unit to the airport.

The ambulance currently stationed in Pine Mountain is one of the county’s backup units. A new ambulance is under construction and is expected to be delivered in April.

In addition to providing for the needs of EMS, features were included in the Pine Mountain Public Safety Center that will allow Harris County EMA/911 to operate in the facility should an emergency need arise.
