The
sight of firefighters in full turnout gear walking around Harris
County High School drew considerable stares after school on
Thursday, November 20.
The
Fire Cadet Exploring program at Harris County High School has
enjoyed a number of activities. During past meetings, the students
have used fire extinguishers to put out flammable liquid fires.
Students have climbed folding, roof, and extension ladders. The
cadets have also pulled attack lines, made mock attacks and set up
drop tanks.
During
the November meeting, the students wore the same turnout gear worn
by firefighters at emergency scenes and took strolls around the
school.
Students learned how to disassemble turnout gear and the importance
of keeping the gear clean. The students learned about the different
layers and how the gear protects firefighters. From first-hand
experience, the students learned how heavy the gear is when worn.
They also practiced donning the gear to see how fast they could get
it on.
In
future training classes, the students will learn to work with even
taller ladders, will wear self-contained breathing apparatus, train
with thermal imaging cameras, and learn search and rescue skills.
The
Fire Cadets are encouraged to attend meetings and training classes
with their local fire departments.
Conducted as part of the co-ed Boy Scouts of American Exploring
program, the fire cadets are exposed to firefighting as a possible
career opportunity, or in the volunteer sector.
The Boy
Scout Explorer Fire Cadet program at Harris County High School is
sponsored by the Harris County Council of Fire Chiefs. |
