During the March meeting of the Exploring Fire Cadet program held at
Harris County High School, the students learned about ladders and
wildlands equipment.
The Fire Cadets worked with ground ladders, including extension
ladders, roof ladders and folding ladders. They learned the various
parts of the ladder and how the different types of ground ladders
are used.
The students then had the opportunity to work with the 75-foot
ladder on Pine Mountain Fire Department’s Quint 1201. The cadets
were allowed to operate the ladder and then allowed to climb it,
wearing proper safety equipment. They also learned the control
systems on the ladder and elevated waterway.
While the ladder was extended, the cadets were taught how to operate
the nozzle at the end of the waterway. The nozzle can be fully
operated from the control platform or from a control unit located
near the ladder tip.
The Harris County High School tennis team was practicing on the very
warm day and took the opportunity to cool off in a narrow fog
pattern from the elevated waterway.
Dr. Craig Dowling, Harris County School Superintendent, happened on
the scene and took advantage of an offer to operate the ladder.
In addition, the Fire Cadets learned a bit about fighting brush
fires and wildland fires.
Hopewell Fire Department’s Squad 51, a combination squad/brush unit,
was at the class and the cadets were shown some of the specialized
equipment used in fighting brush fires and wildland fires.
